Admission into Year 7
The Governors invite applications from parents seeking, unreservedly, a Catholic comprehensive education for their daughter.
The number of intended admissions for the year commencing September 2006 will be 160 (the maximum standard number).
Girls will be admitted into Year 7 without reference to academic ability.
In view of the school’s status as an Arts College the Governors will admit girls with musical aptitude, up to a maximum of 10% of the total number of places available, without undermining the Catholic ethos of the school. Musical aptitude will be determined on the basis of a music audition and references from music teachers and/or schools. Priority will be given to those who show the most aptitude at audition. Additional music training and activities will be provided by the school and these students will be expected to participate in these activities.
In the case of over-subscription the following criteria will be applied in order:
(a) “Looked after” Catholic girls.
(b) Girls from families who are stated by their parish priest to be practising Catholics residing in the local parishes of:
Brentwood
Gidea Park
Hutton
Harold Hill - Most Holy Redeemer
Ingatestone
Harold Hill - St Dominic’s
Warley
Billericay - Holy Redeemer
Ongar
(c) Girls from families who are stated by their parish priest to be practising Catholics residing in other parishes and who cannot attend a nearer Catholic school to their home address, for reasons other than a place not being available.
(d) Girls stated by their parish priest to be baptised catholics.
(e) “Looked after” girls whose families demonstrate commitment to the Christian faith and whose practice is confirmed, in writing, by their minister or religious leader.
(f) Baptised girls, whose parents’ commitment to Christian faith and practice is confirmed, in writing, by their minister or religious leader.
(g) Any other applications.
Notes:
(1) If any one category is oversubscribed the following priority will be applied in order:
(i) to those with sisters* already in school;
(ii) the Governing Body may increase the priority within any of the categories, where evidence is provided by an appropriate professional, at the time of application, of an exceptional social, medical or pastoral need of the child which can most appropriately be met at this school and these applicants will be placed at the top of the relevant category;
(iii) distance as measured by a straight line from home to school, with those living closest being given priority. The Essex County software will be used to measure distance.
(2) A sister* is defined as a sister, step-sister, adopted sister or a girl in long term fostering, living at the same address, who is attending the school at the time of application and for whom there is reasonable expectation that she will be attending at the time of the proposed admission.
(3) “Looked after child” has the same meaning as in Section 22 of the Children Act 1989, and means any child in the care of a local authority or provided with accommodation by them (eg children with foster parents).
(4) A practising Catholic is one who attends Mass each Sunday (or Saturday evening) and Holy Days. Fornightly, monthly or occasional attendance does not constitute "practising". If there are grave reasons why weekly attendance is not possible an explanation should be provided with the application. Applicants will be expected to be Catholics who have been baptised and have made their first Holy Communion and who, together with their Catholic parent or parents, attend Mass weekly.
Waiting Lists
In addition to their right of appeal, unsuccessful candidates will be offered the opportunity to be placed on the Waiting List. This Waiting List will be maintained in order of the oversubscription criteria set out above and not in the order in which applications are received or added to the list. Names are normally removed from the list after six months.
Students with a Statement of Special Educational Needs
The admission of students with a statement of special educational needs is dealt with by a completely separate procedure. This procedure is integral to the making and maintaining of statements by the student’s home Local Education Authority. Details of this separate procedure are set out in the Special Education Needs Code of Practice.
Late Applications
In the case of oversubscription, applications for places, if received after the closing date, will be dealt with in accordance with 5.5 of the Essex Scheme for the Co-ordination of Secondary School Admissions.
Application Procedures and Timetable
The standard application form must be submitted to the home Local Authorityby the relevant date. For Essex, this is 29 October 2007 (LA to confirm).
The school’s Supplementary Information Forms (including applications for Music Scholarship) must be sent to the school by 29 October 2007 (LA to confirm).
Parents will be advised of the outcome of their applications on 1 March 2008 by the Local Authorty.
Unsuccessful applicants will be advised by the Local Authorty of the right of appeal to an independent appeal panel.

The Sixth Form is available for all existing students subject to them fulfilling the individual requirements of suitable courses. Remaining places in the Sixth Form of the school will be distributed in accordance with the oversubscription criteria, subject to applicants fulfilling the individual requirements of suitable courses.
